The need for voice security
Voice calls are increasingly seen by criminals as a rich source of valuable information and it is getting easier to buy cheap interception services. Organisations therefore need to secure sensitive information passed as voice communications to complement current measures targeted at data-at-rest and data communications.
This need is made more urgent as telecom operators converge data and voice networks, replacing traditional circuit-switched landlines with IP implementations which are inherently less secure. It is easy to intercept IP voice calls to access caller and recipient details and the contents of conversations. Furthermore, IP networks are designed to route traffic dynamically, so a call from London to Glasgow may be routed via New York, China or the Middle East, providing intercept access to a large number of organisations, not all as tightly regulated as in the UK.
For businesses, the loss of confidential information can have large financial, compliance or reputation impact. Government of course has further reasons to take information security seriously, whether to counter targeted attacks to protect national interests or to maintain and develop public confidence around citizen data.
Cellcrypt solutions
Secure mobile and fixed phones are already used by governments and some other organisations. But the existing solutions, and especially the mobile phone solutions that are hardware based, have not been adopted beyond a very small group of people because they are expensive, difficult to use, and often hardware obsolete. In addition, from a usability perspective, secure voice solutions for mobile phones have to date almost exclusively only run over Circuit Switched Data (CSD) networks and, as a result, provide low call quality and fail across most international boundaries.
